FAQ

  • What is trauma-informed somatic therapy?

Trauma-informed somatic therapy recognizes that trauma is not just held in the mind, but also in the body. This approach gently supports you in reconnecting with your body’s wisdom, fostering safety, and cultivating awareness of patterns that may have developed in response to overwhelming experiences. It honors the pace of your nervous system and respects your natural capacity to heal.

  • What can I expect from a Hakomi session?

Hakomi is a mindfulness-based, somatic psychotherapy. In a Hakomi session, we slow down and tune in to your present-moment experience such as sensations, thoughts, emotions, or gestures as opportunities to deeper understanding and healing. Sessions often include guided mindfulness, gentle explorations, and slow unfolding of how past experiences shape your current life. You can expect a compassionate, nonjudgmental space that honors your inner wisdom.

  • What can I expect in a first session

Our first session is a time to get to know one another. We’ll explore what brings you to therapy, what you’re hoping for, and begin to understand the experiences that have helped to shape you. I’ll also share more about my approach, answer your questions, and make sure the pace feels right for you.

  • How long are sessions and how often will we meet?

Sessions are typically 55-60 minutes long. Many clients find weekly sessions supportive, especially at the beginning, but we can discuss what frequency feels most sustainable and helpful for you.

  • How much do sessions cost? Do you accept insurance?

My standard rate is $125 per hour. I also accept insurance from BCBS and Aetna (including SHP). Please reach out if cost is a barrier. I have a few openings for sliding scale options.

  • Do you offer virtual or in-person sessions?

Yes, I offer both but I strongly encourage in-person work, when possible. From a somatic perspective, being together in the same physical space allows for deeper connection, co-regulation, and attunement. Of course, I understand that virtual sessions are sometimes more practical, and I'm happy to support whatever feels best for you.

  • What is your professional background and training?

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) with a background in somatic bodywork and over 10 years of experience practicing Esalen massage. I’m a graduate of the Hakomi Method training and currently pursuing full certification. My work is grounded in body-mind awareness, mindfulness, and deep respect for your inherent wholeness.

I also draw on aspects of attachment theory to help uncover the deeper emotions and needs that often remain hidden, yet shape how we relate to ourselves and others. By bringing awareness to these tender places, we can transform patterns of disconnection into trust, safety, and intimacy.

  • Do you work with specific populations?

I work primarily with adults (18+). I offer both individual and couples sessions. I welcome and affirm people of all genders, sexual orientations, and racial or cultural backgrounds.

I also hold awareness of my own identity and position of privilege as a white, middle-class woman with higher education. Grounded in a trauma-informed and inclusive lens, I strive to support LGBTQ+ communities and people of color. I recognize that allyship is not a fixed identity but a continual commitment to equity, humility, and care.

  • What is your cancelation policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. Sessions cancelled with less notice may be charged the full fee unless it’s an emergency or illness.
